Google Will Pay for Using Wikipedia Information

The Wikimedia Foundation announced on Tuesday (21) that Google will pay to use, in its search engine, the most up-to-date and accurate information made available by Wikipedia, through the Wikimedia Enterprise service. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

According to the non-profit organization, the search giant will be one of the first customers of the platform launched last year. Enterprise works as a kind of premium version of the online encyclopedia, allowing you to access up-to-date and large-scale content more efficiently.

Paid service too offers customers the possibility to use APIs that are more suitable for displaying content, meeting the specific demands of each subscriber. With the tool, Wikimedia wants to avoid the distribution of wrong information, coming from unreliable and incomplete sources.

Google uses the foundation’s materials in a variety of ways, for example to fuel knowledge panels displayed alongside top search results, when searching for places, people, and objects, among other things. Information boards to combat disinformation in YouTube videos also feature data taken from the online encyclopedia.

No changes for the common user

O agreement between Google and Wikimedia Foundation for the use of the Enterprise service shall not bring any changes to ordinary users, as per the The Verge, except for a likely greater citation of the encyclopedia as a source of information in the results. You will be able to continue accessing Wikipedia for free, in the version updated by volunteers.

In addition to Google, the entity responsible for the online encyclopedia announced another client for Wikimedia Enterprise. This is the Internet Archive, platform that keeps copies of websites in a database, allowing you to view deleted or changed pages as well as old web layouts. According to the entity, there will be no charge to the Internet Archive for using the service.
